Watch the Pop Style Comping online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from Guitar Interactives

PRINCIPLE 31 - POP STYLE COMPING

In the video at 3.16 I say that I’m moving from the C to the B ...of course I meant B to C...no letters please...:)

I’m using clean arpeggiated chords with common tone open strings to give a harmonically rich drone sound.

My second guitar part is an overdriven delayed pedal tone riff for an Alt pop rock sound. Note that the notes i’m using are chord tones following the chord progression. I’ve used 2 different sounds to create a nice separation of the parts.

This approach has been used by bands like the Script, U2, Flock Of Seagulls, In fact any band that has a guitarist with a delay pedal!
