PRINCIPLE 11 - DIATONIC CHORD PROGRESSIONS
Creating chord progressions derived from the major scale becomes a whole lot easier once you understand what chords are at your disposal. Understanding that these chords are consitent in every key helps tremendously too.
My advice is to start with a groove you like and then mix and match chords until you hear something you like. Develop the idea until you are completely happy with your results.
Once you have a cool progression, try inverting the chords or using alternate voicings to see if you can create something you like better. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve re-written a song using new voicings to find that the song works much better and takes on a whole new life.
I’ve prepared a couple of simple tracks to demonstrate how a diatonic chord progression can be created from our seven chord types. Play through the progressions with my tracks and then play the parts over the bass and drum tracks I’ve provided too.
Of course the idea here is to inspire you to be creative and write your own music...go forth and be musical!
