Watch the Rockabilly online guitar lesson by Jeff McErlain from Guitar Effects Survival Guide
Rockabilly roots can be traced to 1950's rock and roll with artists like Carl Perkins, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Bill Halley and Gene Vincent. A key element of the rockabilly sound is the slapback echo, this echo effect is largely credited to Sam Phillips of Sun records, he was guy who discovered and produced Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins to name a few. He did this by playing one tape machine into another creating a slight delay between the two. It's called slapback because the echo repeat is almost instantaneous. If you dial back the slaback echo, this is the heart of a classic country guitar sound.
