Watch the Motion Controlled Effects online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from Funk Fission

In the midst of our love for expression pedals and real-time control comes even more liberty via the advent of motion controlled effects. Thanks to the brilliant minds at Source Audio, we can now play our instruments while controlling effect parameters in real-time and still be able to jet across the stage to for a knee slide! Huh? You read right, no need for the foot, it’s all in the hands. Wearing the Hot Hand, which is an accelerometer that measures motion against gravitational force, you can send control messages to the pedal with the wave of your hand or whatever the ring is attached to!

There’s not much difference in setting up this rig apart from making sure the sensor is plugged in (can’t tell you how many times I forgot to do that) and the quick and simple calibration process. After the Effect knob is turned to the 6:00 position where it’s marked calibrate, you set your pick hand on top of the strings and then press the Select footswitch until the LEDs blink. This tells the pedal where the center point is in relation to the sweeps. Take note: this is not to say you can’t put your arm over your head and set the zero point there—it all depends on what you’re going for.
