Watch the Lemon online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from Funk Fission

When writing the Sus Chord Symposium articles for Mel Bay’s Guitar Sessions Rock/Blues section I went on a quest for adjectives to try to find words that aptly described the sound of the altered sus chords. I found some really cool ones that make me sound pretty smart, but the one that perhaps did the job best was ‘acrid’. If I were asked to describe this next riff’s overall sound, that’s the word I would use.

The Lemon Riff is one of my favorites as it has an edge I want to hear from the altered sus chords. On top of that: it grooves hard, real hard. In fact, when I used this riff on a video explaining compression to accompany my Pedal Points column for the Mar/07 issue of Guitar One magazine, it got more attention than the matter at hand!

Be warned: as you play this lick if you may feel your lip gradually moving into a Billy Idol like scowl! At the very least, your head will surely start moving where your chin shoots in out like a chicken feeding on its lunch.
