In order to play the double hammer-on the 4th beat of bar 1 use a fret hand 1-2-4 combination to cover the two whole step (four fret) span as opposed to the more common 1-3-4 fingering. Coincidentally it was bassist Gerry Carboy (Barry Miles, David Sancious) who turned me onto this approach during my studies with him in the mid-90’s. Gerry showed me how he used this fingering configuration to deal with the fact he had medium sized hands that had to wrestle with the wide fret span a bass neck possesses. To say this approach works for Gerry is an understatement—he’s a monster!
At the end of this performance I lay down a second position Bm7(4) chord that’s treated with some slight pitch modulation courtesy of some gentle whammy work. I almost always apply this sort of treatment to chords played at these junctures as it gives a very cool effect that seems to make them sound like they’re floating. A smart dose of reverb or delay augments the floating factor even further. Try it, but be warned, it’s very contagious!
