Watch the The Basics online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from Funk Fission

So far throughout this course I’ve shown you many ways to produce percussive tones on your guitar along with ways to vary those tones. This time around I’m going to show you an alternative strumming technique to change the overall timbre of actual pitches. This method makes use of your pick hand first finger by using it like a whip to attack the strings. I picked up this approach from watching Tuck Andress do his thing on an L-5 playing his incredible arrangement of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”.

Pay close attention to the area of your finger where I direct you to draw the power to facilitate these Indiana Jones-like moves and be sure to loosen up your wrist as well. Lastly, be careful, as it’s very easy to misfire and whack a pickup or hit body of the guitar. Plus, coming down on the strings, even correctly, doesn’t feel very good at first so take this approach in small doses.
