Watch the Motion of Bass and Melody online guitar lesson by Matthieu Brandt from Chord Cookbook

In the previous sections we worked with several approaches to playing chords, involving different melody notes on top of one chord, inversions and other ways to create alternative chords. We’ve also heard songs that use a pedal bass and we’ve gone through some chord progressions that had the bass move up and down. In general you can divide a chord that you play on a guitar into three different parts: the bass, the melody note and the rest of the chord in the middle. In this section we'll take a look at how we can make the bass and melody work together to create harmonic motion within a progression.
