Watch the Harmony online guitar lesson by Matthieu Brandt from Chord Cookbook

Songs can be in a major key and in a minor key. If they are in a minor key, the distance between ‘home base’ and the third note of the scale is 1 and 1/2 notes (3 frets). There are several minor keys a song can be written in (Aeolian, Dorian, Phrygian). The most commonly used minor scale is directly derived from a major (Ionian) scale, as we’ve seen in the last section. If you play a major scale, but start and end on the 6th degree, you’ll be playing a minor scale. This minor scale is called an Aeolian minor or the relative minor. In this section we'll discuss the chords we can build with the notes from this scale.
