Watch the Harmony online guitar lesson by Matthieu Brandt from Chord Cookbook

Modern pop, folk and rock music are rooted in the blues. Blues is a mixture of major chords and a minor scale. Because many pop and rock songs use blues elements, we’ll see chords out of the minor scale with the same root show up in a major chord progression. In the key of G major we’ll encounter chords out of the key of G minor. This minor scale built on the same root is called the Parrallel Minor. Using chords built off of this scale in a chord progresion will get you a rocky bluesy edge in a song.
