Watch the Dom7 Chords online guitar lesson by Matthieu Brandt from Chord Cookbook

The chord formula for a dominant seventh chord is 1-3-5-b7. We’ve seen that this is a major chord, with a major third on top of the root and with the flatted 7th added. This note is 10 half notes above the root of the chord, or if you wish 1 whole note down from the root. You can find this chord on the fifth degree of the Ionian major scale. These chords are the basis for blues progressions. In the second part of this lesson we'll explore how we can extend these chords.
