Watch the Complex Slash Chords online guitar lesson by Matthieu Brandt from Chord Cookbook

This section is about chords that have an odd bass note added to them, a bass note you wouldn’t expect. We like to hear a regular major or minor chord have the root in the bass. It’s the first note we hear and it makes clear what kind of chord it is. It doesn’t matter if the chord is a triad or if the chord has four or more notes. Exceptions to that are when for harmonic purposes we use an inversion of a chord. In most cases we'll use the third, fifth or (flatted) seventh as an alternative bass note. But what kind of sounds will you get when you use a different note; the sus4, the major ninth or even another note?
