Watch the C7 - Ab7 Vamp online guitar lesson by Brad Carlton from CAGED Dominant
This segment relies on a little bit of everything – the b3rd to 3rd move, melodic patterns, chromaticism between the chord tones as well as forays into the blues scale. Brad goes on to incorporate some outside phrasing and bends as devices to create tension. When playing with strict melodic limitations, phrasing becomes a key element to introduce tension.
Brad then outlines what has been covered so far – four common bi-chordal links using unaltered, dominant chords. These are the I7-IV7, I7-bVII7, I7-bIII7 and the I7-bVI7. Go back through and review when needed and listen for these chord combinations in other tunes – keep your ears open!
