Here's a superb exercise for getting familiar with the chord tones and their neighboring diatonic scale tones. I call this technique 'framing', which uses the chord tone and the adjacent scale tone above and below. For example, the first sequence is 'R, maj 2, R, maj 7, R'. The second is 'maj 3, perfect 4, maj 3, maj 2, maj 3', etc. Be sure to use only notes within the frame of the 'C form' scale pattern! If the exercise is too fast try playing the first four notes as eighth notes and the fifth note as a half note and repeat this for every five note sequence.
