Watch the Shuffle/Blues March online guitar lesson by Annie Raines from Blues Harmonica Blueprint
When you listen to one kind of music all day (I’m in a recovery program for that now), the different sounds the great players make start to run together in your memory. This is especially true of great blues harp players, since so many are influenced by so few. At times I feel like I’m tracing a piece of musical DNA back to a common ancestor. This shuffle pattern was a mainstay of Big Walter Horton’s repertoire, and often surfaces in the works of his musical descendants, such as Kim Wilson, Sugar Ray Norcia and Jerry Portnoy. Some of their amazing performances are loving tributes to Horton’s signature style. As you’ll hear later on in "Wolf Calls," this piece shares elements with Howlin’ Wolf’s shuffle as well.
