Leaving out the second note in the pattern the first time, and playing the full pattern the second time gives you the most popular variation of the fingerpicking pattern. Lean on the bass notes to give a lilt to the rhythm at medium tempos.

Don't forget to keep the fingers relaxed, and when you use the arm to lean into the notes, you get more drive on the thumb notes without adding any tension. You can also do this with a thumb pick and/or muting the bass strings with the palm of the right hand.
