Watch the C# Phrygian 1 online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from 50 Modal Licks You MUST Know

C# Phrygian, the 3rd mode of the A Major Scale. The opening line of this lick is a C# Minor 7 arpeggio which I'm playing with a bluesy feel. Using the chord arpeggio's to start your solo's really solidifies the tonalities in the melody over the backing chords, complete unity if you like!

The other key components to this lick are the bends that I make sing out over the chords. I'm attacking the notes with the back of my nails to wring every bit of tone out of the strings I want to make these notes cry out and sustain with with a wide vibrato too.

Check that your bends are in pitch. If not, isolate each bend and work on nailing the intonation each time. It's a feel thing and it will come with practice.
