Watch the D Lydian 4 online guitar lesson by Robbie Calvo from 50 Modal Licks You MUST Know
The first thing to point out with this lick is that I am using all downstrokes to play the first 12 notes. You could try alternate picking but I found this easier and more precise. It's an unusual sounding lick that I derived by just 'seeing' a shape from within a Major scale pattern. Sometimes it just works out that way and sounds cool too. Of course the dissonance of the opening lines needed balancing out to my ears, so I wanted the ending phrase to be more melodic and resolute. I achieved that by playing a sequence of descending thirds from the same scale pattern.
