Watch the Chime In online guitar lesson by James Hogan from 50 All-Purpose Pentatonic Licks

U2’s guitarist “The Edge” has been a force on the instrument since U2 broke out in the early 1980’s. It seems that a lot of modern 8th note based pop rock is derived from U2’s sound. Without question, The Edge’s playing is a hugely important part of that sound. In fact, many guitar effects companies market delay effects with dotted 8th settings and “Edge/U2” patches to try to emulate his distinct sound. That alone is a testament to his influence. Lick #25 “Chime In” is an 8th note based pop lick in position II of A Major pentatonic. You’ll hear licks like this used as intros and as underlying themes in a lot of modern pop. This one will sound nice with a bit of delay set to a dotted 8th note.
