Watch the Wes online guitar lesson by James Hogan from 50 All-Purpose Pentatonic Licks

Wes Montgomery is arguably the greatest jazz guitarist of all time. No one swung harder than Wes before or since. Lick # 20 “Wes” showcases Wes Montgomery’s trademark octave & thumb style of playing. Wes worked all day as a truck driver when he started learning guitar and didn’t want to wake his family at night by playing too loud. To overcome this Wes started using his thumb in place of a pick to help muffle the sound. He also developed his octave soloing style during this period. The rest as they say is history. I layed down a jazz backing track for this one. This lick sounds great if you play it using the thumb of your picking hand ala Wes!
