Watch the Sci-Fi Surf online guitar lesson by Jason Loughlin from Essentials: Surf Guitar

The study will take use of b5ths, b6ths, and b9ths both in the melodies and in the progressions. As you would imagine, because of the punk influence, the guitar sound is going to be more distorted than traditional surf. The key is to make sure the sound of the spring reverb is still present. When looking at genres like this, you begin to realize how important spring reverb is to help define the surf sound.

The progression centers around the key of A in the first section. The Eb power chord is the b5 chord I mentioned earlier. Then, we shift to the key of E for the hits. We'll start with a chromatic melody based off of the root and then move it to the 5th of the chord. The breaks give us space to throw in some bluesy surf fills. Then, we'll end the piece by descending chromatically with power chords.
