Watch the Intonation online guitar lesson by Steve Vai from Alien Guitar Secrets: Passion & Warfare

So speaking of technique, there's definitely a couple of things that I'd like to point out to be aware of when you're practicing. One of these is the quality of the tone of notes you're hitting (as we talked about earlier), but another to be aware of is your intonation. Intonation is when you hit a note and getting exactly the note you want out of it. Doing otherwise sounds amateurish, unless, of course, it's the effect you're going for. But getting your intonation together is very important, and something you have to listen for when you play. If you push too hard on a note, it's going to go sharp. If you pull on a note, it's going to go flat. And if you bend a note, it's going to go sharp. Intonation comes into play in all aspects, for instance when playing chords, where it's important to be gentle and delicate when you play them.
