Watch the Slide Study 11 online guitar lesson by Sonny Landreth from Slide Supernatural

Let's take a look at the Zydeco Shuffle. The picking on the song was influenced by my hero Chet Atkins. Start off on the 12th fret and here I'm going to play a shuffle rhythm with my pick hand. I keep the slide floating over the 12th fret and use my first finger to fret the 10th fret of the fourth string to imply the IV chord. Next I’ll add in some of the palm technique I discussed in the techniques section. It helps to remember that the slide is floating above the fretboard so there's actually a space between the slide and fretboard, so don't be afraid to push on the strings a bit, but don’t choke out the notes behind the slide too much. This is also where it is important to have that guitar setup for slide properly. You also may notice when I'm playing the melody I'm keeping my slide on the higher strings, that allows me to use some of the open strings of bass notes. I also use my third finger right behind the slide for most of the muting when needed. That frees up my first and second finger to fret the notes behind the slide quickly and comfortably. As always, I cannot express paying attention to your vibrato enough. It is it really such an important element to play but adds another dimension to your music and voice.
