Watch the Slide Study 9 online guitar lesson by Sonny Landreth from Slide Supernatural

So using the rhythm that we just learned in slide study number 8 we're going to get in the Lydian mode which I absolutely love. For this melody I am incorporating finger guarding the top three strings with my right hand. This allows me to mute whichever string I am not playing. For example if I am playing the melody on the second string, my middle finger will play that note and my first finger and ring finger will mute the third and first sting. The palm either mutes or guards the bottom three. I have the wonderful option to open it up if I want more overtones. With this particular melody it's a nice long slide with vibrato. Pay careful attention to my fingering and you will see the finger guarding in action. Notice what fingers are being lifted up while playing the melody. This is an essential technique to playing slide guitar. It allows us to articulate a melody very clearly.
