Watch the Palm Technique online guitar lesson by Sonny Landreth from Slide Supernatural
Let’s talk about another type of muting, and one I get asked about a lot. It’s like a palm bounce. Here’s how it’s done: since you are playing with a slide, you have some distance between the string and the fretboard behind the slide. This leaves us space to press down on the strings and not choke them out; this space allows the ghost notes we have discussed to ring out. Start by muting a rake with the pick hand, this will start some of the ghost notes to bring out behind the slide, as I do this I take the palm of my pick hand and bounce it across the strings. You have to get used to it, it’s kind of weird at first, but the more you do it, the more you get the feel for it. You can change the speed of the bounce and it gives a tremolo effect, the ghost notes add some nice atmosphere. Take your time with this one!
