Watch the A Melodic Tuning online guitar lesson by Sonny Landreth from Slide Supernatural
A melodic tuning. I love this sound because I seem to always find little melodies every time use this special tuning. A melodic tuning is just like open A tuning, you have an E on the bottom, A, E, the A again. So we have those nice octaves again. He's the fun different part, I keep the second string a B and I tune my high string to C#. So E, A, E, A, B. C#. It’s amazing how many different combinations you can make of melodies with just those three notes. What’s really pretty is the way they slide out and let everything shimmer. Experiment with just playing the I, IV, and V chords on the open strings, fifth and seventh frets. If we look at it as a variation of open A we now have the 3rd on the high string which gives us some great melodic options. The B on the second string acts as a suspended 2nd and adds a lot of character, especially when playing ghost notes behind the slide. Add some vibrato to really add some vibe.
