It's good to do exercises that start on a higher note and work down. There is something mentally challenging about starting on a higher note. We tend to tighten up and squeak it out rather than just relax and treat it like any other note. The key to this exercise is to relax completely. Keep your larynx in its natural position, keep your throat and neck relaxed, and engage your breath and your voice at the same time. In other words, don't take a big breath in anticipation of that first note and hold it before releasing it to sing. Inhale, and sing on the exhale. Use the support from your column of air. Your ear training comes in handy here. Think the note in your head as you sing it, and your pitch will be more precise.
