The first time I heard Ravi Shankar bending the strings on a sitar I was completely perplexed. So amazed, I went out and bought one, and still have fun playing it. It's a lot of fun achieving the sitar effect through note bending, carefully selected scales, and playing over a drone.
Over the track we'll experiment with the Bilawal, or its Western counterpart, the major scale. Experimentation is key, and when you have a good handle on this and want to really heighten the effect, try playing these ideas with a slide—you'll really see the benefits of being able to slide into the notes rather than fretting them.
