When you are soloing, remember to keep one ear on the rhythm part! I can't stress this enough. That way you always hear all of the options that you could play over the chords.
This one is a great example of this. Most players would just hear this one as a "bluesy groove" in E and would immediately start jamming in the 1st position of their E minor pentatonic scale at the 12th fret. But, we also have the option of listening and "tuning in" to the fact that we are using the E7 chord, so we could play a mixolydian scale! Remember to listen up!
