Watch the Gaining Stage Experience online guitar lesson by Jennifer Batten from Rock Sauce for Rhythm Guitar

Playing in a good cover band is one of the greatest apprenticeships you can do. It’s an environment in which to cut your teeth and get experience on stage. In essence, you’re emulating the styles of 40 or more different guitar players (in a top 40 band), so your bound to learn a lot. It’s a great way to train your ear, get used to playing in a band, and experience the variety of acoustics in various clubs. Regardless if you ultimately want to write and record your original music, at some time or another you’ll probably put in a few years playing cover songs. It’s also great training for song writing, and it can be a way to make a living without getting a day job.
