I'll give you a few phrases here where I combine the D mixolydian (dominant) mode, with the D minor blues scale. The dominant chord is the most fun to play over because you can get away with murder. The only note you really want to stay away from is the major 7th. In D mixolydian mode, that would be C#. It really goes against the harmonic grain (wrong sauce!) But if you play the major 7th as a passing tone or as part of a chromatic run, you can play that as well. So really, you have all 13 chromatic notes at your disposal.
