Watch the Sonic Shapes online guitar lesson by Reeves Gabrels from Rock Inside Out

As a young player, I was inspired by a Howard Robert article on Sonic Shapes. I very much related to that approach and often use shapes to visualize a part and achieve a certain sound. These shapes can be particularly helpful if you find yourself boxed in and need to find a way out.

In this lesson, we’ll look at two different Sonic Shapes and how you can piece them together chromatically and move them around to get to different spots on the fretboard when improvising.
