Watch the Stairway online guitar lesson by Andy Aledort from Kings of Rock & Roll Vol. 7: Jimmy Page
The chord progression i-bVII-bVI (one-flat seven-flat six), which in the key of C minor would be Cm-Bb-Ab and in the key of A minor would be Am-G-F, is one that can be found in hundreds of rock tunes, Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" among them. One of the nice things about soloing over this type of progression is that one can sit right on the minor pentatonic (or blues) scale of the tonic and everything will sound great; it's even better if one throws in a flatted sixth every once in a while in order to relate directly to the bVI chord.
This Page-style solo is based on A minor pentatonic, and, over the F chord, I occasionally drop in an F note to strengthen the melodic quality of the solo.
