Watch the Ben's Overdub online guitar lesson by Angus Clark from Hard Rock Survival Guide: Rhythm
Post-grunge hard rock brought us some really technical players who managed to show off a lot without taking traditional solos. Textural players and sonic wizards like Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine were the heroes of the time. Just like with the grunge example, you have to approach the track from a different place when you're playing this part. Clean up the sound a bit, put the delay on, etc., then be that guy. The delay guy. You can even try the part through a pitch shifter pedal if you want to harken back to the time when they first put that technology in a pedal and everyone had to use it. Then put it away, please. This is a great example of negotiating full chords in drop D. That's the main take-away lesson here, so get it together!
