Watch the Downstroke Workout online guitar lesson by Angus Clark from Hard Rock Survival Guide: Rhythm
Speed and power! We're revving up the engine and here's your first real downstroke workout. There's a couple of key learnings in how these riffs are played. Pay attention to where I play the E chord and the corresponding D chord in the various sections. Particularly the use of the open D chord created by the 4th and 5th string in the pickup to the main riff. There's nothing too complicated going on harmonically, but just get the sound and attack right! Try to use the flat of the pick against the string - don't slice at it diagonally. Concentrate on breathing and relaxation while you play - don't tense up in the wrist or anywhere else. Also check the little inflections in the pentatonic riff section of the song. Make sure you are getting the stylistic touches down!
