Watch the Breaking Melodic online guitar lesson by Angus Clark from Hard Rock Survival Guide: Lead

I can't give you too many notes on this one, just note how I change pickups before moving up the octave and restating the melody in single notes. I don't switch pickups during a solo very often. Some guys do it routinely, just to create different flavors for different phrases. I see switching pickups as a bit more dramatic, it denotes a real shift in tone and flavor, like stepping on an effect. Almost like faking having a second guitar player step in. Also, I tone down the vibrato and everything in the octaves section, cause you really want to keep octaves in tune.
