Watch the The Epic online guitar lesson by Angus Clark from Hard Rock Survival Guide: Lead
Live performance is very important to Hard Rock. When rock blew up in the arenas in the 70's (thank you Peter Frampton), everybody had at least one tune in their live set that became an extended epic with down-dynamic grooves and massive crescendos. Hard rock bands like Deep Purple and Black Sabbath developed their own version of this kind of show-stopper in their live shows and this form is a version of that. The groove at the start is an ode to "Mistreated" by Deep Purple which Blackmore did an amazing version of live with Ronnie James Dio in Rainbow. The lead work is kind of a mixed bag of classic and modern approaches, and owes more to Tony Iommi and Synyster Gates than it does to the Man in Black. Come along for the ride and we'll talk more in the breakdown.
