In the style of alternative-power-punk-rock nothing serves up a melody and/or solo break better than the mighty octave. Here in Guitar 2 we will call upon this super-sonorous interval to build us a bridge. A what? A bridge. A bridge that will connect the raw power and basic harmonic motion of Guitar 1 with the freedom afforded to Guitar 3. This will make more sense after getting the gist of what’s going on here in Guitar 2, but will only completely make sense once you wrap your head around Guitar 3.

Keeping the octaves stationed on the 5th and 3rd strings a repeating eight bar melody is set up where once again voice leading is the key component. Contained within the voice leading is our old friend motivic development. In bars 1 and 2 over the G5 a motive is stated where a 10th position octave at G is played for the first four 1/8 notes. From there the G on the upbeat of beat 2, played with an upstroke, is slid down a half step to D (5th). This same approach is repeated in bars 5 and 6 with the idea played a whole step above giving you A (3rd) and E (7th) to link up with the F5. Back in bars 3 and 4 over the D/F# the rhythmic part of the original motive is tweaked a bit. The final of four G’s (4th) played at the upbeat of 2 this time grace note slides to it’s intended note, which is an F# (3rd) a half step below. Now, just like bars 5 and 6, the starting octave for the E5 in bar 7 is a whole step above at A and proceeds to play the same motive as bars 3 and 4. This time however the chord tones against the E5 are A (4th) and G# (3rd). The latter note indicates the major tonality hinted at in the Guitar 1 Breakdown text.

Given the potency of the chromatic riff played in bar 8 of Guitar 1 it’s a good idea to just join it 'cause you sure ain’t gonna beat it. That’s why in bar 8 over here in Guitar 2 the riff is basically matched an octave above with the only additive being the tritone interval played on the downbeat instead of a lone E. This, by the way, clues us in another piece to the E5 puzzle. Given the tritone contains the 3rd and b7th of E we gotta Mixolydian situation going on here!
