sound so good. Taking hints from similarly composed excursions such as “25 or 6 to 4” from Chicago or Green Day’s “Brain Stew” Guitar 1 starts off with a stock G5 rooted on the 6th string. From there the V chord comes in at bar 3 by way of a very cool 1st inversion voicing that has the 3rd of D (F#) in both the top and bottom voices. Basically what happens is the top and bottom notes of the G5 (I) come down a half step making for the tightest of tight voice leading. Continuing that approach the D/F# (V) sans 5th sends the notes on the 6th and 4th strings down a half step once again while the 5th fret D comes down a whole step to C. All of the movement creates a tightly voice led 1st position F5 (bVII) power chord that’s played throughout bars 5 and 6. Coming 'round to the finish line the F5 simply moves down a half step in linear fashion to an open position E5 (VI) that’s played in bar 7 up until the aforementioned chromatic run.

If you haven’t noticed already the roman numeral used to denote the E5 indicates the chord is major as opposed to the diatonic minor quality it should be in the key of G. Going all the way back to Spy Hunter where 3rd-less conjecture was played in Am within Guitars 1 & 2, we saw that you could solo with both major and minor tonalities. Here, the E5 laid down by Guitar 1 allows for Guitar 2 to take whatever road it chooses and that’s a good thing because the VI chord in a progression such as this sounds great both as a major or minor chord.
