Guitar 2 is more The Edge than Billy Duffy with its extreme chime and use of analog delay with a touch of modulation (The Edge was a huge Memory Man user in the early days and that’s exactly what delay model is being used in the POD tone file that was used and is included with Guitar Cubed) and a cavernous reverb. One reason why harmonics are being played as such here in Guitar 2 is to take advantage of the timbral difference between them and fully fretted notes. Harmonics, especially at the 12th fret, have a very round, bell-like tone, which allows them to jump out throughout this part. Just play the very first bar where the 12th fret G is played as a harmonic against the fretted A and F# notes and you’ll immediately get the picture.

You’ll notice in bar 2 after playing the 12th fret G harmonic there’s a jump to the 3rd position to nail the perfect 5th between D and A on the 2nd and 1st strings. All together if played correctly this produces a really cool sounding Dsus4 (D G A) chord that can only be achieved by doing it this way. Trust me, it’s worth the effort. From there you descend down A Mixolydian but in a way that allows the notes to ring together creating a sonic embroidery rich with color that’s just awesome to hear. This can’t be said enough: all of these parts demand careful arching, but the extra effort will be rewarded when you hear the results.

Switching back to the Billy Duffy vibe, Guitar 2’s second half starting at bar 9 rips into some very rockin’ open string droned riffing that has counter melodies played on the higher adjacent strings. Make sure the fret hand thumb comes over and does its job muting out the 5th and 6th string as you will not have the option to have the tip of the 1st finger to help out this time around.

The counter melody that goes from G-A on the 3rd string in bars 9-10 and 13-14 serve as a contrary motion (first mentioned in Rocking Chair) instance to Guitar 1 where the top of the chord goes from G-F# on the 2nd string. As Guitar 1 pounds out an open A5 in bars 11-12 and 15-16 Guitar 2 lays down a more intricate, yet [still] simple counter melody that first utilizes chord tones (C# and E) and then walks up the A Mixolydian scale starting at the 2nd degree (B).

It just rocks!
