Watch the Club 54: 3 online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from Guitar Cubed
Club 54 brings in some very cool percussive elements that play a key role in how Guitars 1 & 2 were composed. The trick was NOT to play along with these elements, but to let them have their moment and play around them. The first element is the hi-hat opening up on the upbeat of 1, 3 and 4; which is perhaps the crowning disco element. Another point of interest is the ghost playing on the snare and how that can be a very cool rhythmic fodder for ideas.
Listening to the bass you’ll hear a signature slap and pop approach applied to octaves that spell out the progression that aptly complements the hi-hat’s tomfoolery.
Take note once more: In the video explanation I make mention at the onset of the drum loop there’s no upbeat hi-hat goofiness. I was wrong, there is. Sorry!
