While tapping on higher strings, mute the lower strings with the heel of the right hand. The first idea shows a pedal point in the bass, while the tap finger moves on to other notes above. The second idea is stylized after Ed Van Halen where the tapped high note assumes the pedal point and the fretting hand moves to other notes below. The music of Bach is loaded with both of these pedal point approaches and worth exploring.
