Watch the Legato Playing online guitar lesson by Dave Celentano from Classical Concepts for Rock Guitar
Legato technique produces a smooth series of notes by employing lots of hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, and tapping, and uses very little picking. This example combines pull-offs, slides, and hammer-ons, and zig zags in a mostly descending direction through the A natural minor scale (A Aeolian for the mode freaks). For the series of pull-offs that begin this example, pre-plant the designated fret hand fingers (pinkie, middle, and index) on the proper frets before doing the pull-offs. This may take a bit of getting used to, but the desired results are worth the effort. Notice that the pick only strikes each string once - on the first note of each new string.
