Watch the Bettsica online guitar lesson by Will Sophie from 50 Southern Rock Licks You MUST Know

After Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1971, the Allman brothers band continued with only one guitar player. His name of course is Dickey Betts. Betts was often mentioned as the 'second' best in the band. To me, he was very much underestimated in this early period. While Duane was a very powerful and emotional player, Dickey seemed to be more laid back and calculating in his game. His chops and skills were more based in the American country blues. In 1973 the Allman Brothers recorded their best album at the time: 'Brothers & Sisters'. It features Dickey Betts in a key role position as a true lead guitar player, stepping out of Duane's shadow. In this next example we're gonna do some trademark Dickey guitar licks, based on the major pentatonic country scale. This is lick number 10.
