This idea has been around for awhile. You can even hear it's echos in Glen Miller's In the Mood. I always thought it sounded like an old engine being turned over. It's a great example of guitarists imitating the call and response between the horn sections of a jump swing band or a big band. Thinking of multiple voices reacting and playing off each is a great way to approach either soloing or rhythm guitar parts.
