Watch the White Knight online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from 50 Metal Guitar Licks You MUST Know

The open position is not just for the first few pages of a guitar how-to book. In fact, it's where some of the most metal of metal riffs and licks are conjured up. One such example is "Still of the Night" as originally played by the criminally under-appreciated John Sykes during his tumultuous tenure in the Led Zep-like Whitesnake. This riff goes for the same in-your-face swagger the original possesses with it's open position F# minor blues inflections and ends with an octave ricochet that may remind you of "The Immigrant Song" from a band these guys sound like to a fault at times.
