Watch the Root Down online guitar lesson by Chris Buono from 50 Metal Guitar Licks You MUST Know

Stephen Carpenter of Deftones has made some monumental metal for sure. Be it his use of angular chord voicings, massively dropped tunings or his impeccable use of dynamics--Deftones are one hip metal band. Carpenter's use of alternate picking low register string riffs as heard in the example serves as a peak into his creativity. Culled from an early Deftones classic "Root" from their debut outing, Adrenaline, this riff outlines the D Natural minor scale. For extra credit, try transferring those notes to the 5th and 6th strings and making them roots of power chords as Carpenter does in "Root" once the band kicks in.
