Every style of music has it's signature rhythms: reggae chanks the staccato upbeat, the blues plays on the 1st and 3rd triplet for a more swingin' feel, funk is all about syncopating 16th notes, etc. A defining rhythm for metal is what's called the gallop, which is comprised of the downbeat and the last two 16ths of a quarter note strung togther in a continuous race around the track. Everyone from the pioneers to the up and coming have used the gallop similar to this example that draws from the fierce opening to an early Metallica classic, "Motorbreath" from Kill'em All.
