Watch the Hook It! online guitar lesson by Neil Zaza from 50 Melodic Rock Licks You MUST Know
Hooks are something that catches the listener in and draws their interest or attention. It’s like a musical magnet, so to speak. And it is something that we are going to be looking at in this lick. A hook has a combination of a few different elements. Things such as simplicity, phrasing, note choice and most importantly, a vocal-like aura around it. To accomplish this, all we need is to visualize ourselves singing the line as a chorus. Something big and strident with an almost anthemic approach. Keep the fancy riffs for the solo section, this is all about the melody. In this lick I am working in the key of E major. In the beginning I work around the E major shape on the 4th fret and near the end of it I am arpeggiating A major and adding additional chord tones for color. Check it out.
