Watch the Melody Maker online guitar lesson by Neil Zaza from 50 Melodic Rock Licks You MUST Know
You’ve heard the trite expression that if you want to make someone pay attention don’t scream, but rather, whisper? Take the phrase as gospel and proceed to studying this lick! In the ear of our listener, we’ve probably been assaulting them with screaming riffs, ripping arps, and mind numbing chops. They’re maxed out! What’s the solution? Bring the volume down and really address certain parts of the phrase differently dynamically. Altering dynamics and tones (i.e. different pickups, playing with fingers, etc...) can really draw the listener in and make them pay attention. Think of trying to explain something emotional to someone in a conversation. Your voice would waver, rise and fall and really punctuate the phrase you are speaking. Same goes for the guitar.
